David Fleishhacker Bio

David Fleishhacker is a career educator and author. He has served independent Bay Area schools for almost four decades, most recently as Interim Headmaster of two schools in the South Bay. In 1970 he was appointed Headmaster of the Katherine Delmar Burke School in San Francisco, a position he occupied until 1995. Between 1962 and 1964, David taught English in Afghanistan as a member of the Peace Corps.

He presently functions as President of Music in Schools Today, as well as the Fleishhacker Foundation, a charitable foundation that makes grants to arts and educational organizations in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. David also participates on the Boards of the Booker T. Washington Recreational Center, the San Francisco Boys' Chorus, the Youth Orchestra Committee of the San Francisco Symphony, and St. Joseph's Hospital/Health Alliance in Los Angeles. In the past, he served on the Boards of numerous nonprofits, including International House, Berkeley, the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls, and the Urban School.

In February of 2002, David published Lessons from Afghanistan, a book about his Peace Corps experiences. He has also published articles in the San Francisco Chronicle as well as various educational periodicals. David recently drafted a book on basic educational reform.

He earned a BA in English from Princeton University and a MA from the University of California, Berkeley.
